RLSS Open Water Activity Supervisor Course
We intend to hold the Royal Life Saving Society’s Open Water Activity Supervisor course at the Lake this summer. This qualification enables activity supervisors, school teachers and other group leaders who plan to do activities on or near water to learn important lifesaving skills and what to do in the case of an emergency.
Minimum requirement for the course are that the trainee must be over 16 years of age and be able to swim a distance of 50m comfortably (back and front).
The course will be open to Lake members and non-members.
The course involves a combination of classroom theory, practical life support and water sessions culminating in an assessment at the Lake.
We plan to run the course from the middle of May with assessment sessions at the end of June/early July. The course will involve attending 5 x 3hour sessions. The cost will be in the region of £60 (concessionary rate for under 18’s etc £30) which includes all tuition, course materials, insurance, membership of the RLSS and assessment. The course will only be run if there is enough interest shown.

Sauna Proposal

Proposed Sauna Location behind Ladies Changing room
The idea of installing a sauna at Henleaze Lake was first raised at the Club’s AGM in 2007. It’s been suggested that a sauna at the Lake would provide a relaxing recreational facility and would enable members to warm up after a cold swim. Recent consultation with swimming members showed results consistent with the Club’s earlier survey of members in 2009, with a majority of those who responded in favour of a sauna at the Lake.
This year a Sauna Sub-Committee conducted a thorough investigation into the justification, feasibility, cost and management implications of having a sauna at the Lake. Its report reviewed potential benefits and drawbacks. A sauna might support increased usage of the Lake, especially during the colder months of the swimming season (May and September). Running costs were found to be not excessive and might well be covered by guest revenue generated by the sauna. A site (behind the Ladies Changing Rooms) was identified, discreet enough for the Lake’s appearance and ambience not to be significantly affected. The environmental impact of a sauna was also considered and judged to be not unduly high and the operational requirements were felt to be manageable. The Club’s Executive Committee were impressed by the thoroughness of the report and have agreed that it is a ‘do-able’ investment but are aware that it is a controversial issue for a number of members.

Susie Parr - The Story of Swimming

Susie Parr at the Lake
Club Member, Susie Parr, has just published the book The Story of Swimming, it covers the history of swimming in the UK from earliest recorded times (Romans onward) to the current revival in open water swimming. It is full of wonderful illustrations and includes a number of short pieces about Susie's favourite swimming places including the Lake. I'm sure many Lake members will recognise how Susie feels about swimming in open water.
Susie will be speaking at the AGM about her book and her love of swimming. She will be happy to sign copies of her book.
New Years Day Swimming 2012

Allie Dunnington feels like a new person!
Not too horrendous this year - we did not have to break any ice and the water temperature was a balmy 7C! About 50 people swam and 50 more watched.
